Historically, maritime fuel product prices were extremely high in Turkey due to a high consumption tax. This high tax led to a robust black market trade up until 2003 when governmental reforms eliminated this tax altogether. With the elimination of the consumption tax, a healthy market in maritime fuel was born in Turkey.
Armarin Maritime Fuel Company (Armarin Denizcilik Turizm Insaat Tekstil Dis Ticaret ve Sanayi Ltd. Şti) was established by Omer Mustafaoglu and Savas Yazici in the 2003 as two part, diversified fuel distribution firm to service both the domestic maritime fueling and international maritime fueling markets and thus exploit this newly revivified market in Turkish territorial waters. In the years since its founding, Armarin has become the leading maritime refueling firm and dominates the fishing boat fueling sector.
The company is the exclusive maritime representative of Opet Petroleum Ltd, the fourth largest fuel distribution company in Turkey. www.opet.com.tr Opet is a subsidiary of Koc Holding Group which is the largest diversified business group in Turkey. www.koc.com.tr
In addition to general maritime fueling operations, Armarin is the exclusive fueling contractor to the Marmaray Project, the tunnel construction project between the European and Asian sides of Istanbul across the Bosphorus Strait. www.marmaray.com
The Marmaray project is a unique and supremely important civil engineering project expected to markedly improve Istanbul’s notorious traffic congestion at a cost of $2.2 billion USD. The Taisei Corporation, a Japanese company www.taisei.co.jp, is the project’s main contractor. It was established in 1873 and has undertaken many notable construction projects in Japan and around the world. The Taisei Corporation works on approximately $15 billion USD in contracts each year.
